Heavy Melting Steel

What contaminants are not allowed in HMS scrap?

Short answer: Buyers do not want non-ferrous metals, such as copper and aluminium, sealed or hollow containers, tyres, rubber, plastic, concrete, soil, wood, glass or oil-soaked material mixed in with the steel, because these can damage furnaces, contaminate the melt or pose a safety risk, so a load found to contain them will be downgraded, discounted or rejected.

Other metals

Copper, aluminium and stainless steel contaminate the melt and are worth more separately.

Non-metal material

Concrete, wood, rubber and plastic add weight but no value and can cause problems at the mill.

Sealed containers

Closed or pressurised containers are dangerous in a furnace and are refused outright.
